What is a caffeine Withdrawal Headache and How do I treat it?

As the name implies this occurs due to sudden stoppage or reduction in caffeine intake. Experts now believe that as little as one cup of coffee a day if stopped abruptly, as is the case when one goes 'cold turkey', is enough to trigger withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine withdrawal headache has been getting increased study in medical research in the field of pain management.

Headache is the most commonly reported symptom of sudden caffeine withdrawal, sometimes accompanied by blurred vision. Withdrawal headache typically occurs 12 to 24 hours after last intake of caffeine but onsets of as late as 40 hours have been recorded.  Duration of headache is from 1 or 2 days to as long as 9 days after cessation of caffeine.  In most cases the more caffeine consumed the more severe the symptoms but in some individuals doses as low as 100mg per day were found to cause withdrawal symptoms.

Headaches caused by vascular dilation have also been labeled as caffeine withdrawal headaches due to the similarities in the structure of caffeine and another chemical found in the body, adenosine.  Caffeine results in a decrease in the body's threshold for vascular dilation headaches.

Treating Headaches caused by Caffeine Withdrawal

The best and most obvious remedy would be to eliminate the use of caffeine altogether. However many sufferers are reluctant to do so and caffeine is contained in a wide range of foods as well as medicine. Some are able to obtain relief from symptoms by taking a low dose of caffeine at the same time each day and carefully avoiding any increase in that amount. A headache caused by caffeine withdrawal is therefore the easiest of all headaches to treat yourself.
