Tension Headache causes and treatment

Headaches caused by tension are probably the most common kind of headache in our modern day.  Brought on by stress, it is often described by sufferers as the feeling that your head is in a vise.  Unlike migraines and cluster headaches where pain is usually one sided, tension headache pain affects both sides of the head.  Pain can be either a dull, constant ache or a sharp, throbbing pain.  Exposure to bright lights and loud noises can sometimes bring on a tension headache due to sensory overload.

As the cause of tension headaches is stress, logically the best way to eliminate them is to eliminate the underlying stress.  Resting for an hour in a dimly lit room with soft music often brings relief.  Taking a hot shower, or if time permits, a leisurely bath, helps to relax the tense muscles that often accompany tension headaches.

Exercise is another often overlooked way to control tension headaches.  A walk in the fresh air for 30 minutes to an hour helps improve blood flow as well as clearing the mind.  Stay away from noise and traffic fumes as these will aggravate your headache.

Over the counter medications bring relief but often result in a drowsy feeling and according to some studies, may bring about a rebound headache.
Many people prefer more natural help such as through relaxation, herbal treatments and homeopathic remedies.  As with any type of pain, if it persists see your medical practitioner to rule out any underlying causes.
