A Real Pain in the Neck type of headache
One of the most common causes of headaches is tension in the neck muscles.  Typically this type of headache occurs towards the end of the day, after hours of sitting at the computer or whilst driving home in traffic.  Whilst over the counter pain killers such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen (known as paracetamol in some countries) may provide a measure of relief, these really do not address the cause and may even, in some cases, actually lead to more frequent recurrence of the headaches.

Treating the Stiff Neck Headache
The best treatment of tension headaches is to learn how to prevent them occurring in the first place.  Learn what the triggers are in your particular case and become familiar with the onset of symptoms.  If you work at a computer all day set a reminder to get up every hour and stretch your neck and shoulder muscles.  While you are up get yourself a drink of water and ensure that you have plenty of liquids during the day to prevent dehydration.  Coffee, tea and colas do not count as these actually cause you to lose fluid from your body.  Herbal teas, such as camomile have a mild calming effect.

Learn relaxation techniques and practise these when you feel your tension rising.  Take deep breaths in and out, remind yourself that getting upset will only worsen the situation not improve it.  Play relaxing music or inhale some essential oils.  Lavender is particularly good, it can also be massaged on your forehead, temples and the back of the neck and helps relieve stress.

Try these simple suggestions and you may find that you are able to reduce or even eliminate your stiff neck / tension headaches.
